Parang totoo nga ang tsismis! Legarda ‘thinking about’ becoming DSWD secretary
By Xave Gregorio
Senator Loren Legarda said she is thinking about being named as the next Department of Social Welfare and Development secretary after she finishes her term in 2019.
“Can I say that I am thinking about it,” Legarda said in an interview on ANC on Monday (December 18).
Legarda, however, remained tight-lipped on whether President Rodrigo Duterte had offered her the post.
“I am not certain whether I am allowed to comment on that on national television, but my being mum about it would probably spill the beans,” she said.
“Let me just say that I would want to exercise very strong oversight functions over a department that is very important, that takes care of the needs of our people.”
Legarda dodged questions pressing her to confirm Duterte’s supposed offer by saying she appreciates the opportunity of chairing the Senate finance committee, which is in charge of crafting the national budget.
“I think the President, hopefully, appreciates the work we do. Not just myself, but the whole Senate,” she said.
Politiko previously reported that sources have confirmed that Legarda will be the next DSWD chief, succeeding former Secretary Judy Taguiwalo, who was booted after the Commission on Appointments rejected her.
Should Legarda become DSWD secretary, she would join Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar and Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano as Duterte cabinet members who crossed over to the executive branch from Congress.
