Pare-pareho nating problema ‘to! Duterte underscores shared security concerns in ASEAN Summit
President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday (November 13) said security issues will take the center stage in discussions throughout the 31st ASEAN Summit.
In his speech during the opening ceremony for the summit, Duterte said traditional and non-traditional security issues are a challenge to all ASEAN member states and dialogue partners.
“For example, terrorism and violent extremism endanger the peace, stability and security of our region because these threats know no boundaries. Piracy and armed robbery in the seas put a dent on our growth and disrupt the stability of both regional and global commerce,” he said.
Duterte added that the problem of illegal drugs also poses a danger to the ASEAN member countries.
In the next two days, Duterte said he and other leaders will be looking at the progress of ASEAN community building, as well as the direction of the cooperation with dialogue partners.
