PH mulls total ban on sending OFWs to Kuwait- Bello
The Philippine government is considering banning the deployment of Filipino workers to Kuwait following the execution of helper Jakatia Pawa last January, Labor Secretary Silvestre “Bebot” Bello III said over the weekend.
Bello, however, said the government is giving the matter serious thought so as not to give Kuwaiti officials the impression that the proposed ban is a retaliatory move.
“So medyo pinapa-ano pa naming, pinatagal namin para sa ganun ay hindi ganun ang magiging impression nila,” he said in a briefing in Bahrain, where President Duterte is on the second leg of his three-country visit in the Middle East during the Lenten season.
Bello said there have been several reports about the maltreatment of Filipino workers, particularly household help, by their Kuwaiti employers.
Pawa was executed for killing her employer’s 22-year-old daughter in May 2007.
Meanwhile, Bello said he is negotiating for the deferment of the death sentence to another OFW in Abu Dhabi, and another one in Kuwait.
