Pimentel: No need for Senate loyalty check
No need to do loyalty check, Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III on Thursday said.
Pimentel made the statement amid reports on the signing of a resolution of 14 of his colleagues in the majority bloc expressing their call for a re-organization and “electing” Majority Leader Vicente Sotto as the “new Senate president.”
“I have no idea about that reso (resolution) because Tito Sen (Sotto) has not mentioned it to me. Open naman ang communication lines namin,” he said.
Of the 17-man majority bloc, Pimentel and Sen. Grace Poe have yet to affix their signatures.
As far as Pimentel is concerned, “nothing will happen on Monday.”
Sen. Gregorio Honasan admitted that there is a meeting of the majority bloc on Monday at 1:30 p.m. He did not disclose the agenda of the meeting.
But sources said it is likely that the said resolution will be discussed and put into effect when plenary session resumes in the afternoon.
Asked if he will consider doing loyalty check, Pimentel does not see the need for it.
“I am willing to be replaced,” he said, underscoring that his replacement should be someone whose term goes beyond June 30, 2019 “so that we will still have an SP (Senate president) after that date and Sen. Sotto also complies with that requirement.”
