Pimentel seeking extension as Senate president – sources
Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III is allegedly seeking an “extension” of his stay, at least until he has settled down with his reported fiancé Kathryna Yu.
But sources, however, said that members of the majority bloc are already resolved in seeing the “turnover” of leadership to Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III and this was reinforced during a meeting that took place in the residence of Sen. Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri.
“It’s a consensus. It’s not a matter of if or what but when,” a source said.
One of the “signatories” in the resolution expressing support to Sotto as the new Senate president even insisted in proceeding with the leadership change this week but was told to defer the matter as the upper chamber is mourning the passing of the late Senate President Edgardo Angara.
“Ang balita, he (Pimentel) wants an extension. It will be decided on Monday kung pagbibigyan (ng mga senators),” a source said, referring to the “caucus” next week.
Pimentel himself earlier this week admitted that he would wanted to remain to his post if he could have it his way.
At that time it was yet to be reported that Pimentel was considering the “timing” of his wedding to Yu as the reason why he wanted to defer the enforcement of his “term-sharing” agreement with Sotto.
“Kung ako ang tatanungin mo kasi kung pwede sanang hindi na di ba?” he said in jest to reporters when asked on leadership change last Tuesday.
But Pimentel himself acceded that “if there is change in sentiment (of my colleagues, then) we should follow the sentiment.”
While his wedding preparations are being kept under wraps, sources said Pimentel is set to marry Yu sometime in July.
