Ping: Diplomatic approach is the correct method in resolving WPS issues
Diplomacy should be the first and best option in dealing with China over its destruction of coral reefs in the Philippine-claimed Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Thursday.
Lacson agreed with Malacanang’s position to use a bilateral consultation mechanism instad of filing a new arbitration case to address the problem.
“When dealing with bilateral relations with any country, there couldn’t be a better option than through diplomatic means; not only because it is the more practical approach or mechanism to resolve issues given the present circumstances, but also the correct one,” he said in a text message to Senate media.
Besides, he said filing a new arbitration case against China should only be resorted to as our “second to the last and ultimate option, which is going to war.”
Earlier, acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio said the Philippines should file a new case seeking compensation for Chinese fishermen’s destruction of coral reefs.
Carpio is part of the government’s legal team in the arbitration case against China.
