Sen. Panfilo Lacson on Tuesday night lauded the Supreme Court for acting swiftly on the Senate’s recommendation to disbar University of Santo Tomas law dean Nilo Divina and 20 other Aegis Juris fraternity lawyers involved in the cover-up of the hazing death of Horacio Castillo III.

In a tweet, Lacson said the high court received the Senate committee report on the hazing death Feb. 1, and sent out notices to the respondents on Feb. 6.

“Amazingly swift and decisive action by the Supreme Court. They received the Senate committee report on the hazing to death of Atio Castillo III only last Feb 1. Less than a week later on Feb 6, notices were being sent to the respondents, subject of the disbarment complaint,” he said.

The high court had issued notices to the respondents after the Senate committee on public order and dangerous drugs headed by Lacson recommended their disbarment.

In its en banc resolution, the high court considered the Senate panel report, where it said senior Aegis Juris members were involved in the cover-up.

Earlier, the Senate panel noted senior fraternity members communicated via Facebook chat to plan the cover-up of the death of Castillo.

One of the lawyers was even a staff in the Supreme Court’s Office of the Administrative Services, the panel noted.

The Supreme Court required Divina and the 20 others to comment on the complaint within 10 days.

Divina had denied knowledge of the supposed cover-up, but was found to have failed to immediately inform authorities and Castillo’s parents.
