PLDT-Salim or Globe-Ayala? Duterte turns down campaign contribution from big phone firm
Ex-North Cotabato Gov. Manny Pinol is claiming that Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has turned down a major campaign contribution from a big business group.
In a Facebook post, Pinol said: “In fact, just recently, he refused a financial contribution from a huge telecommunications company because he was afraid that there would be conflict of interest when he becomes President.”
The local telecommunication industry is controlled by only two business groups: PLDT-Smart of Salim Group of Indonesia and Globe Telecom of the Ayala family. Pinol did not say which of the two made the spurned offer.
“Many other offers of financial contributions from big political funders have been turned down,” claimed Pinol who defended Duterte from accusations that he has ill-gotten wealth.
“People of Davao City and those who know him are aware that you could accuse Duterte of a lot of things but not corruption. Duterte has no record of corruption in all of the 23 years he has been Mayor of Davao City and he has consistently refused financial gifts even during the elections from big business corporations,” said Pinol.
