PNP needs P900M budget to fund war vs narcos – Esperon

National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon on Friday said the Philippine National Police (PNP) deserves the P900 million intelligence budget that it needs to enforce the war on drugs next year.

“Iyung tokhang fund as requested by the PNP they certainly need that,” Esperon said when asked to comment on the plan of Sen. Sonny Trillanes to re-align part of the “tokhang” intel fund of PNP to the Armed Forces’ intel budget for 2018.

Trillanes believes the AFP need more intel funds than the PNP since the military has to address security concerns such as the Marawi crisis and the Chinese incursions at the West Philippine Sea.

“Iyung pagsabi na tatanggalin ko ‘yan para lang sabihin na may diperensya ‘yung (anti-drug) operations, then let’s adjust ‘yung operations,” he said in a chance interview at the Senate.

Esperon was at the Senate yesterday to defend the proposed P186.3 million budget of the National Security Council which the Senate Committee on Finance, chaired by Sen. Loren Legarda, approved.
