Poe slams RJ Jacinto’s proposed cell tower duopoly: Kalokohan ‘yan!
Senator Grace Poe has criticized musician Ramon “RJ” Jacinto for his proposal to limit the number of cell tower operators to two, saying there’s no place for a new duopoly in the telecommunications industry.
“Kalokohan ‘yon,” said Poe, who chairs the Senate public services committee. The panel held a hearing on the selection of a third telco player on Monday (October 22).
“Mali talaga na mayroong monopolya niyan,” she added.
Jacinto, who is President Rodrigo Duterte’s adviser on economic affairs and information and communications technology, proposed that only two companies will be accredited by the government to build cell towers. These firms will then lease the towers to telcos so they could improve their services.
Philippine Star columnist Boo Chanco said an estimated 50,000 additional towers need to be built to properly serve 113 million telco subscribers in the country.
Poe said there should be no limit to the number of companies that could build cell towers as long as they follow the regulations set by the government.
“Kung maraming cell towers, mas gaganda ang signal natin. So payagan ang lahat ng telecommunications company na magkaroon ng access diyan at dapat yung pagbayad nila sa renta ng towers na ‘yan ay pantay-pantay,” she said.
