Priest at Mass for Trillanes jokes about praying for Duterte to get sick
by Xave Gregorio
A priest who celebrated Mass for the embattled Senator Antonio Trillanes IV made a dark joke about praying for President Rodrigo Duterte to get sick when the Catholic Church called for prayers after he called God stupid.
“Pinagdasal ko noon na magkasakit si Duterte. Kasi diba medyo pagod na siya, eh ‘di magpahinga muna siya,” Father Noel Gatchalian said in his homily during a Mass in the Senate on Thursday (September 6).
“Ang totoo po nun,” Gatchalian continued, as if gearing to take back his statement, “Isa lang ‘yun sa mga dalangin ko. Marami pa tayong dinadalangin na panalangin ng bayan.”
The Mass was celebrated three days after President Rodrigo Duterte issued Proclamation No. 572, which declared void from the start Trillanes’ amnesty and ordered his arrest.
Since its publication on Tuesday (September 4), Trillanes has not left the Senate building, in an effort to evade arrest.
During the Mass, drug addict-turned-priest Father Flavie Villanueva told Trillanes to not be afraid, as he faces Duterte’s proclamation, which opposition politikos has decried as “persecution.”
Trillanes has said that he is not afraid of Duterte, who he called a coward for issuing the proclamation while he is in Israel for a state visit.
Talks about Duterte’s supposedly failing health still abound, even after Communist leader Jose Maria Sison’s claim that the President has slipped into a coma has been debunked.
