Purisima checked US-sourced info on ‘Oplan Wolverine’ – source
Suspended Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Alan Purisima verified the “actionable intelligence” used by the Special Action Force (SAF) in its covert operation to arrest Malaysian terrorist and bomb expert Zulkifli bin Hir, otherwise known as Marwan.
According to the source, Purisima used “foot soldiers” to verify the information provided to him by the United States government regarding Marwan’s whereabouts. US officials had used drones and satellites in obtaining the information.
Moreover, the source said, the US government and Purisima have been exchanging intelligence information on Marwan since 2005. The Malaysian terrorist is on Washington’s list of most wanted terrorists and has a $5 million bounty for his capture.
The police general also said President Benigno Aquino III flew to Zamboanga City last Sunday to closely monitor the developments of the covert operations in Mamasapano, Maguindanao, which was codenamed “Oplan Wolverine.”
“The President even had an advance party of the Presidential Security Group in Cotabato so that he would immediately fly in there to receive Marwan’s turnover. The Americans were also there ready with the $5 million bounty for Marwan’s head,” the source said.
The SAF’s operation ended in bloodbath after its members encountered rebels from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in pursuit of Marwan. A total of 44 police commandos died in the incident while at least 12 were injured.
