‘Ramdam kita! Sereno ‘understands’ why Duterte wants her impeached

Nov 20, 2017 @ 9:35

Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno has no doubt that President Rodrigo Duterte wants her kicked out of the Supreme Court based on his public speeches and his Palace mouthpiece.

“Does he have a hand in my impeachment? I go by his official pronouncement and I wish him success as a President but I hope he understands that checks and balances are very, very important for any democracy,” Sereno said in an exclusive interview with ANC’s Karen Davila.

She said Duterte has also asked her and Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales to resign at the same time. She said Duterte’s spokesperson also asked her to leave her office.

Sereno pointed out that Duterte himself has publicly endorsed the impeachment complaint filed against her in the House of Representatives by lawyer Lorenzo Gadon.

“At one time, he thought Attorney Gadon’s complaints against my extravagant lifestyle had some basis… he then kept quiet later on,” said Sereno.

Sereno, who will not retire until after three more pesidents, does not recall having any “personal skirmish” with Duterte.

“I remember he made a remark against me in connection with the letter O wrote to him in August 2016 to give due process t the judges (whom Duterte outed as drug protectors). I was emphasizing the need to defend institutions right to conduct their own investigations of errant members. The moment you announce names of judges, you basically take them out of their functions,” said Sereno.
