The real kingmaker: GMA’s assurance of funding made Duterte run for president- report

Jul 9, 2017 @ 19:18

Former President Fidel Ramos may have convinced then-Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to join the presidential race, but the politiko who firmed up his mind about running is no other than former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

In his July 9 column, writer Mauro Gia Samonte said it was Ramos who talked to Arroyo about possibly funding Duterte’s campaign during the crucial period in 2016 that the then-mayor was mulling a presidential run.

Arroyo was then detained at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City on plunder charges.

“In the first trips, it is said that Ramos got negative answers from the Davao City mayor, but during the penultimate trip, Ramos reportedly got Duterte’s word that he would run if he got assurance of funding,” Samonte said.

“It was after this particular visit that Ramos proceeded to see GMA, and during his final visit to Davao City he already was carrying the assurance Duterte needed,” he added.

Barely two months after Duterte assumed office, the Supreme Court acquitted Arroyo in her plunder case, paving the way for her to regain freedom.

IT’S PAYBACK TIME? Arroyo funded the Presidency of Duterte and she got released immediately and all her cases were dismissed by the courts. VERY NICE!
