Robredo alarmed at CHR’s P1K budget: That’s like abolishing the agency!
Vice President Leni Robredo has expressed alarm and dismay at the House of Representatives’ decision to give the Commission on Human Rights a measly P1,000 budget for 2018.
In a statement Wednesday (September 13), Robredo said she was bothered by the message the House is sending by slashing the CHR’s budget considering that violence and killings are rampant.
“Tila pagbuwag sa CHR ang magiging epekto ng desisyong ito. Nagbabadya ito ng kawalan ng respeto sa ating Saligang Batas at sa karapatang pantao– parehong banta sa demokrasya,” she said.
Robredo noted that the CHR was established specifically to protect against an abusive regime.
Voting 119-32, the House slashed the CHR’s proposed P678-million budget for next year.
Robredo urged the public to remain vigilant to ensure the CHR is given the budget it deserves.
“Hindi pa tapos ang deliberasyon. Umaasa tayong mananaig ang nararapat sa ipapasang budget,” she said.
