Robredo opposes ‘no el,’ term extension: Asan ang demokrasya doon?
Vice President Leni Robredo is against the postponement of the 2019 elections and the extension of incumbent politikos terms to pave the way for a shift to a federal form of government.
Speaking on her “BISErbisyong Leni” radio program on Sunday (January 7), Robredo said the election is the only way people can participate in selecting their leaders.
“Kapag inalis natin sa ordinaryong Pilipino iyong karapatang pumili kung sino iyong magre-represent sa kaniya, nasaan na iyong demokrasya doon? Kaya sa atin, kontra tayo sa walang eleksyon,” she said.
As for term extension, Robredo said incumbent politikos should not benefit from it.
“Kasi kung makikinabang kami, parati nang may kuwestiyon kung ano iyong intensyon bakit magkakaroon ng term extension. Parang self-serving…,” she said.
Robredo said it should be future politikos who will benefit from a longer term in office so that the motives of lawmakers pushing for Charter Change will not be placed in doubt.
Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III earlier said Duterte’s term may be extended as part of the transition process to a federal form of government. Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, meanwhile, has floated a “no election” scenario in 2019 as Congress debates on Charter Change.
