Running scared: Alvarez might vie for congressional seat in Surigao del Norte
House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez is considering running for congressman in Surigao del Norte due to a looming showdown in his current district, Davao del Norte.
Politiko has learned that Alvarez is planning to transfer his voter records as news swirl that Davao del Norte Reps. Antonio “Tonyboy” Floirendo Jr. and Anthony Del Rosario plan to join forces to ensure his defeat in 2019.
The Speaker may indicate his resort in Siargao Island as his place of residence to pave the way for his candidacy.
Alvarez needs a Plan B since his fate in Davao Del Norte remains uncertain.
There are reports that Alvarez’s estranged wife, Emelita, plans to challenge his reelection bid.
Given Floirendo’s wealth, he could easily bankroll Emelita’s candidacy and give Alvarez a run for his money.
Whoever Floirendo decides to support can be assured of political muscle courtesy of Davao City mayor Sara Duterte’s “Hugpong ng Pagbabago” party.
Both Floirendo and Duterte have been at odds with Alvarez.
Floirendo has a feud with Alvarez over the division of quota for banana exports.
Duterte, meanwhile, has slammed Alvarez as an “asshole” for accusing her of being part of the opposition for creating her own party.
Since the odds are stacking up against Alvarez in Davao del Norte, he’s now looking farther in Mindanao for political survival.
