We’ll deal with that later.

This was what opposition Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said Friday (September 24) when asked about the Palace’s challenge for him to file an impeachment case against President Rodrigo Duterte.

“Saka na. We’ll just deal with the crimes of Mr. Duterte ‘pag wala na siya sa pwesto,” Trillanes told reporters.

“We’re just taking note of all his crimes. And then kapag mawala na siya sa pwesto, and nakita niyo naman ‘di ba, it can be sooner rather than later,” he added.

Impeachment is a process where Congress ousts a high official, like the president, for committing culpable violations of the Constitution, treason, bribery, graft and corruption, other high crimes and betrayal of public trust.

Trillanes previously said Duterte committed an impeachable offense by telling the military to stage a coup against him and by allowing a foreign power to influence him, for saying that a “sympathetic” foreign government tipped him about an ouster plot against him.

In response, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque challenged Trillanes to file an impeachment case against Duterte, but added that he is sure this would not prosper in the lower chamber dominated by the President’s allies.

“Let him file another impeachment complaint, wala rin namang mangyayari diyan kasi wala naman talagang saysay,” Roque said Thursday (September 13).

Trillanes’ partymate, Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano, said he is readying to file yet another impeachment complaint against Duterte for claiming that a foreign government supplied him with intelligence information on his critics.

Alejano has previously filed an impeachment complaint against Duterte for supposedly culpably violating the Constitution, engaging in bribery, betraying public trust, committing graft and corruption, and other high crimes.

This was junked by the House justice committee in May 2017.

The Constitution only allows one impeachment complaint to be initiated against the same official within a year.
