Sambar backs hike in SSS premiums to fund pension raise
PBA Party-list Rep. Mark Sambar is a rare supporter of the upcoming premium increase on Social Security System (SSS) members.
According to the politiko, there ought to be a “presumption of regularity” as far as the unpopular 1.5 percent contribution hike is concerned.
“Baka kulang pa, we have to study,” Sambar told a news forum in Quezon City Thursday (January 12) as if to suggest that the figure could be bloated further.
The premium hike–to be collected by the SSS in May–is controversial since it will be imposed just four months after the P1,000-increase in the pension of retired state social fund members.
Section 4 of the Social Security Act of 1997 states that additional benefits for members shouldn’t be subsidized by an increase in contributions.
To this, the congressman said: “Hindi illegal na itaas ang [premium] rate, ang illegal yung itataas rate kasi walang fund mapagkukunan [for pensioners], bawal yun.”
