Senado ang susi! Ex-Ateneo dean Tony La Viña: No chance Sereno will be impeached
Administration allies in the House of Representatives may have the numbers to transmit the impeachment complaint against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno to the Senate, but former Ateneo School of Government dean Tony La Viña believes there’s no chance she will be impeached.
In his September 30 column for the Manila Standard, La Viña shared his belief that the senators will “act independently and with wisdom” with regard to the impeachment case.
“I am confident Sereno will not only get the minimum votes so the two third’s majority for conviction is not reached but she will get a majority of Senators to vote for her acquittal,” he said.
La Viña, who currently teaches law subjects in various schools, said it will be an “abuse of power” for the House to bring the impeachment to the Senate for trial since the charges leveled against Sereno are, as she argued, baseless.
He urged House committee chairman Rep. Reynaldo Umali and the entire chamber to dismiss the impeachment complaint filed by abogado Larry Gadon as soon as possible.
“Hopefully, the Chair and members of the Committee on Justice and the House of Representatives as a body will see that and end this process quickly,” La Viña said.
