Sereno breaks silence after abogado’s killing: Wala na talagang pag-asa kay Duterte!
Ousted Supreme Court (SC) chief justice Maria Lourdes Sereno has lashed out at the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte for his failure to stop the continued killings of lawyers.
“Any government that does not act to stop the rampant killing of defense lawyers, by such inaction, kills not only its citizens and their defenders, but also the rule of law, and thereby, extinguishes hopes for a just and humane future,” said Sereno.
Sereno made the statement in response to the death of lawyer Benjamin Ramos, one of the founding members of the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL).
Ramos, secretary general of NUPL Negros Occidental Chapter, is the lawyer of the families of the nine farm workers who were slain last Oct. 20 in a sugar plantation in Sagay City, Negros Occidental.
Last Tuesday (Nov. 6) night, lawyer Benjamin Tarug Ramos, NUPL Negros Occidental Chapter secretary general, was gunned down by motorcycle-riding gunmen in Kabanlakan.
