Si Speaker ang susi! ‘Big chance’ House will impeach Robredo – Koko
There’s a “big chance” for an impeachment complaint against Vice President Leni Robredo to prosper in the House of Representatives given Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez’s clout, Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III said.
In an interview over dzBB Sunday (March 19), Pimentel noted that only 100 of the 292-strong chamber needs to vote in favor of impeaching Robredo for the complaint to be transmitted to the Senate.
Alvarez, he said, has the support of at least 230 lawmakers.
“Pag ginamit ang imagination sa political, kung sin Speaker Alvarez ang magli-lead [ng impeachment laban kay Robredo], ilan ang followers niyan? 230. So 100 ang kailangan doon na suportahan siya doon, so lulusot ‘yon,” Pimentel said.
“This has a chance of passing the [House of Representatives]. Malaki ang tsansa,” he added.
Alvarez has said he is considering filing an impeachment complaint against Robredo for “betrayal of public trust” after she criticized the government’s drug war in a video message for the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs.
Solicitor General Jose Calida said his office will help Alvarez in pursuing the impeachment case against Robredo should he proceed with it.
While Pimentel said the likelihood of Robredo’s impeachment by the House is big, he refused to comment on how the Senate will act on the issue.
He said he cannot comment on the Vice President’s possible impeachment since he will preside over the trial should the complaint reach the Senate.
