Something doesn’t add up: Duterte’s sugar tax hits 3-in-1 coffee, not Starbucks — JV

Jul 28, 2017 @ 10:51

Well, this is a bit unfair for poor folks.

If President Duterte’s sugar tax proposal is passed, 3-in-1 coffee products would be subject to the levy but Starbucks signature drinks would not, according to Senator JV Ejercito.

Ejercito earlier pushed for a thorough study on the government’s proposed tax reform program amid concerns on its adverse impact on consumers.

“The irony in the proposed tax reform is those who drink 3 in 1 Coffee will pay almost double, while Starbucks coffee will not be affected,” the senator tweeted.

“For some, coffee is already their ‘meal’ in the morning. Coffee will now be a luxury to the ordinary citizens,” he added.

He said public servants must strive to uplift the living condition of the people. “We need to carefully study the tax reform program,” he said wrote on Facebook.
