Sotto takes Bam’s side in Marawi meeting snafu: Nasa Senado siya!
Senate Majority Leader Vicente “Tito” Sotto III is willing to vouch for Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV amid the controversy involving the allegation that he met with opposition politikos in Marawi City before the Maute group’s attack last May.
Sotto made the assurance Wednesday night (June 7) to Aquino while they were both attending a social event along with some of their colleagues.
“I will vouch for you, I’m the majority floor leader, alam kong nandun ka sa session nung May 2,” Aquino quoted Sotto telling him.
Sotto confirmed what he said to Aquino and his willingness to vouch for his colleague, if need be.
“Besides, I don’t think Bam (Aquino) will engage in any such activity,” he said.
The insinuation that Aquino may have something to do with the Marawi crisis was made by Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II, who claimed that the lawmaker met with Senator Sonny Trillanes, Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano, former Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs Ronald Llamas before the Mautes staged their attack on May 23.
Aguirre has apologized to Aquino over the allegation though he has yet to make a public apology, as the senator demanded.
For Aquino, the support he has gotten from his colleagues over the issue show it goes beyond politics.
“It cuts across the majority and minority already. Kapag nagbibintang ka sa mga senador ng mga bagay-bagay na peke hindi lang po personal yung laban na ‘yan,” he said.
