Speaker wants zero budget for CHR — Gascon

Sep 8, 2017 @ 12:27

Commission on Human Rights chairman Chito Gascon told reporters that the CHR might get zero budget for 2018 after the plenary debate on their budget proposal got deferred twice at the House of Representatives.

But he said he is ready to reach out to Alvarez to try to convince him that the CHR should get funding for its programs and projects.

“Opo ready kami na humarap sa kanya. Kahapon si Commissioner Gwen Pimentel-Gana, nag-reach out, dahil galing sya sa Senado, kapatid po siya ni Senate President, humingi ng pulong at binigyan naman ng pagkakataon si Commissioner Gwen na harapin sya, although ang sinabi kung pwede, siya muna, in other words, hindi pa ako nakaharap kay Speaker,” he said.

Gascon said Pimentel-Gana spoke with Alvarez but after their conversation, she reported that, “Ang posisyon ni Speaker Alvarez ay maaaring gusto pa nyang ituloy yung nasabi nya na mababawasan ang aming budget.”

“Pero may ilang araw pa at maaaring magbago pa ang isip ni Speaker,” he said.
