Special session set: Duterte wants Congress to extend martial law

Jul 17, 2017 @ 22:15

President Rodrigo Duterte has called Congress to a special session on Saturday (July 22) to discuss the possible extension of martial law in Mindanao.

Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said lawmakers have to “discuss and consider the actual parameters to extend martial law and suspension of the writ of habeas corpus.”

Proclamation No. 216, which placed Mindanao under martial law, is set to end next week.

Under the Constitution, the declaration of martial law is only good for 60 days unless it is extended by Congress.

House Majority Floor Leader Rodolfo Fariñas said the special session will start at 9 a.m.

Fariñas, however, was mum on how long Duterte wants to extend martial law.

“He mentioned the period but let’s wait for his formal letter to Congress. In fact, he only informed us (SP Pimentel, Speaker BA, Sen. Sotto, ES Medialdea, Sec. Cayetano and I) at his table about his request for extension,” he said.
