Surprise! De Lima joins Duterte on TIME’s ‘Most Influential’ List

Apr 21, 2017 @ 8:17

Despite topping the online poll, President Rodrigo Duterte isn’t the only Filipino to land a spot on TIME Magazine’s list of 100 Most Influential People for 2017.

Senator Leila de Lima, a staunch critic of Duterte, was also included in the list.

She was classified among “Icons” of the world, joining the likes of acclaimed American actress Viola Davis, Canadian author Margaret Atwood and Olympic champ Simone Biles.

In her writeup for De Lima, former United States Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power said: “It is a disturbing testament to the current solidarity among strongmen and the global surge in impunity that De Lima’s cause has not been more embraced.”

De Lima has been detained at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center in Camp Crame since February over drug-related charges filed by the Department of Justice.

She insists her imprisonment is part of political persecution by the administration because of her relentless criticism of Duterte.
