Swak sa CSI wannabes! House panel OKs bill creating Forensic Science Institute in UP
The country may soon have its training ground for forensic science experts after the House committee on higher and technical education approved a bill creating a Forensic Science Institute in the University of the Philippines system.
House Bill 417, or the proposed Forensic Science Institute Act, aims to promote research and development in the various fields of forensic science by having a dedicated entity for it.
The measure, authored by Sorsogon Rep. Evelina Escudero, also aims to provide a venue where personnel involved in forensic science can train so they can improve in the administration of justice.
“I think it is just appropriate that we have this particular Institute to be established in the University of the Philippines,” she said.
Under the bill, the Forensic Science Institute will be under the direct supervision of UP’s president. It shall have a faculty and staff with expertise in the disciplines of biology, chemistry, law, molecular biology, social sciences, statistics and other pertinent disciplines.
The institute is proposed to have an initial funding of P300 million.
