That’s what BFFs are for: Dominguez confirms advising Duterte on rejecting EU aid
Finance Secretary Carlos “Sonny” Dominguez on Thursday (May 18) confirmed that the government’s decision to reject a multimillion-dollar grant from the European Union came from him.
In a text message forwarded by Presidential Peace Adviser Jesus Dureza, Dominguez clarified that the administration did not cancel any existing grant from EU.
“PRRD (Duterte’s initials) approved the recommendation not to accept the EU’s offer of a grant about $280 million which would involve review of our adherence to the rule of law,” he said.
“That specific grant that is considered interference in our internal affairs,” Dominguez added.
The Finance Secretary is a childhood friend of Duterte.
At a press briefing, Abella said the Department of Finance will be in charge of looking for alternative sources of funding for projects that will be affected by the rejection of the grant from EU.
