There’s still time: Ateneo de Manila calls for public support to overturn Sereno’s ouster
The Ateneo de Manila University is urging the public to raise their opposition to the Supreme Court’s ouster of former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, insisting that the only way to remove her from office is through impeachment.
In a statement released Thursday (May 17), ADMU president Fr. Jose Ramon “Jett” Villarin said only the legislative branch has the power to oust Sereno by convicting her in an impeachment trial.
“Nagmadali ang Korte sa quo warranto, isang teknikalidad na ginamit at minaneobra para patalsikin ang isang opisyal na maaaring matanggal lamang sa proseso ng impeachment,” he said.
Voting 8-6, the Supreme Court invalidated Sereno’s appointment as Chief Justice over her failure to submit all of her Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth to the Judicial and Bar Council, which screens the applicants to the judiciary.
With Sereno’s camp expected to file a motion for reconsideration soon, Villarin called on the public to let the Supreme Court magistrates know about their opposition to granting the quo warranto petition.
