Safety over speed: Poe asks DOTr if MRT ops need to be suspended

The MRT may have to stop operating for the safety of passengers, Senator Grace Poe said on Thursday (Nov. 16).
“Kailangan nilang (Department of Transportation) gawin ay siguraduhin na ligtas ang ating mga mananakay,” said Poe.
The senator, who chairs the Senate Committee on Public Services, said the transportation bureau must decide if the MRT would continue operating after a woman’s arm was trapped between train cars and severed, and after two train cars separated while running.
“Kailangan maglakas loob sila. Magagalit ang taongbayan, kasi marami talaga ang mahihirapan na walang MRT. Pero, ang importante ay ligtas sila,” Poe said.
She added that if the transportation department should decide to halt operations, it must present a plan so as to not inconvenience commuters.
“Wag natin isugal ang buhay ng ating kababayan dahil natatakot tayo na akuin ang responsibilidad,” she said.
