Too many LP bets for lone congressional seat in Siquijor
Over at the relatively quiet Visayan province of Siquijor, the Liberal Party (LP) is faced with a major dilemma as their members are at loggerheads on who will be the lone district’s bet for Congress in 2016.
Incumbent Siquijor Rep. Marie Anne Pernes won in substitute of her deceased husband Jay and in the process toppled the long-entrenched Fua political dynasty in 2013.
But the scuttlebutt from local officialdom in the towns of Siquijor and Larena reveal that incumbent Vice Governor Fernando “Dingdong” Avanzado – yes, the former Quezon City third district councilor and husband of Jessa Zaragoza – is bored to his eyes working in the slow-paced life of the province.
It also doesn’t help that he isn’t seeing eye-to-eye with Governor Zaldy Villa, also a member of the LP.
Rep. Pernes knew that fellow LP member Avanzado wants to run for Congress. But what worries her more is that Sec. Joel Rocamora, an official of the Akbayan party-list group, lead convenor of the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) and Siquijor native, wants to snag her post.
Pernes may end up not have a ninong within the LP national hierarchy as Avanzado is known to be a. favorite of Speaker Feliciano Belmonte when the latter was mayor of Quezon City. Meanwhile, Rocamora is allied closely with the Mar Roxas segment of the LP.
The recent information from Siquijor LP operators is that the 2016 LP line up will have Villa for governor, Siquijor town mayor Mei Ling Quezon for vice governor and Rocamora for congress.
How will the LP resolve this ticking time bomb which will certainly make a loud a bang come Election Day? Abangan!
