Trillanes laughs off ethics case: If Duterte’s rape jokes are fine, is calling senators ‘puppets’ bad?

Jul 4, 2017 @ 17:14

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV will face “head on” any ethics complaint to be filed against him by fellow senators for being abrasive.

Senators JV Ejercito, Panfilo Lacson, Tito Sotto strongly objected to Trillanes’ recent tirade against some members of the Senate majority bloc whom he viewed as “puppets” of Malacanang.

“I would welcome any ethics complaint filed against me in the Senate,” said Trillanes, after learning that Ejercito intends to bring him before the Senate Committee on Ethics chaired by Sotto.

“But here’s the thing, if Sen. Ejercito believes that my statement that the Senate is becoming a lapdog of the Duterte administration is highly offensive yet sees nothing wrong with Duterte’s rape comments to the soldiers, then we really have a problem,” Trillanes said.

Ejercito believes “it is high time that we refer to the Senate Ethics Committee Sen. Trillanes’ actions since he is becoming damaging to the institution, and becoming destructive to the country.”

Trillanes earlier criticized President Rodrigo Duterte for making another “sick” rape joke just to emphasize his support to government forces fighting the Maute terrorists in Marawi City. The President had placed Mindanao under martial law after the Maute extremist group seized Marawi City last May 23.

The Commander-in-Chief visited the troops in Mindanao on May 26 and told them:“For this martial law and the consequences of martial law and the ramifications of martial law, I and I alone would be responsible. Just do your work. I will handle the rest. I will be imprisoned for you. If you rape three [women], I will say that I did it.”

In reaction to the President’s rape joke, Trillanes said: “Duterte assuring legal absolution for soldiers who commit rape during martial law is as dangerous as it is sick.”

He added: “At a time when our people are looking for assurances that the abuses of the past Martial rule would not resurface anymore, the Commander in Chief, in fact, does the opposite. How I long for the day the people would realize that they have a madman for President.”
