UP Prof to Duterte: Hindi lang ikaw ang binoto, si Robredo may mandato din!
A University of the Philippines political science professor reminded President Rodrigo Duterte that he would be disrespecting the will of the people if he refused to accept Vice President Leni Robredo as his constitutional successor.
In an interview with DZMM, political pundit Aries Arugay said the 1987 Constitution does not have a provision for the president’s conditional resignation and it does not empower him to choose his successor.
Arugay said the President should wait until the draft constitution has been approved which would mandate the election of the President and Vice President as a team. But until then Arugay said the President has no choice but to respect the people’s will which gave him and Robredo their own mandates.
Duterte declared that he was not too keen on having a constitutional succession of power and that he wanted either losing vice presidential bets Bongbong Marcos or Chiz Escudero as his successor instead of Robredo.
