VP Robredo reminds Pinoys: Human rights applies in our everyday lives

Human rights affects our everyday lives and should not be treated as an inconvenience, Vice President Leni Robredo said.

Robredo noted the change in perspective over human rights, saying that people fail to take into account how these are substantial in the way we live our lives daily.

Pero hindi nare-realize na ‘yong pang-araw-araw na ginagawa natin, parating kinakailangan natin ‘yong pag-protect ng ating human rights—’yong ating pag-aaral, ‘yong ating katahimikan, ‘yong ating kalusugan,” she said in her radio show, Biserbisyong Leni, on Sunday (June 24, 2018).

Robredo noted that it is the obligation of the people—and the government—to uphold human rights, as part of the international community, and bodies that protect such.

The Vice President made the remarks when asked about the joint statement issued by the group of chairs, vice-chairs, and members of the United Nations human rights treaty bodies and the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders.

In the statement, issued for the 20th anniversary of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, UN human rights experts called on States “to ramp up measures to safeguard and support human rights defenders” amid “increasing pressure globally.”
