Wag idaan sa hearing: Migz Zubiri dares Duterte’s critics to impeach him
Senator Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri has dared persons critical of President Rodrigo Duterte to file an impeachment case against him instead of using Senate hearings to tarnish his reputation.
Zubiri issued the challenge as he expressed support for the reorganization of the Senate committee on justice and human rights, which led to the ouster of Senator Leila de Lima as panel chair.
“If some persons want to expose certain issues about the President, their proper recourse is to impeach him. File an impeachment case,” Zubiri said in a statement Tuesday (Sept. 20).
“If they have an axe to grind against President Duterte, they should file a case against him instead of transforming Senate inquiries into political circus,” he added.
De Lima was ousted as committee chair Monday (Sept. 19) after the Senate, in a 16-4 vote, approved the motion to declare all positions in the legislative panel vacant.
Although he did not mention De Lima’s name, Zubiri expressed disappointment at the way Senate investigations are supposedly being used to further other people’s political agenda.
He said legislators should avoid using the chamber for selfish means.
“Let us avoid using the Senate for grandstanding. I respect the power and prerogative of the Senate to investigate, but, once someone’s political agenda is involved, the whole process is derailed and public interest is forgotten,” Zubiri said.
