Wag kasing ipilit: Koko says Andy’s resignation will cut short any impeachment trial
The impeachment trial of Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chair Andres Bautista will be for nothing if he resigns from his post, Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III on Thursday said.
Pimentel is reacting to Speaker Bebot Alvarez’s insistence on proceeding with the impeachment even after Bautista has announced his plan to resign by the end of this year.
“Let us say, there is already his resignation letter, because as of now we have no certified true copy if there’s any resignation letter, then he is deemed separated from government service. Wala na dapat, stop na ‘yung impeachment (proceedings),” he said.
Even if the trial proceeding is ongoing, it will effectively be put to a halt the moment that Bautista resigns from his post.
“It should be put to a stop because the aim of the impeachment (process) is to remove him from his position. If he’s no longer in his post, then there’s no need to proceed with the trial,” Pimentel said.
