Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman Andres Bautista will go down in history as the first poll body chief to be impeached, KABAYAN party-list Rep. Harry Roque said Wednesday (October 11).

Roque said Bautista’s announcement that he will resign effective December 31 doesn’t matter since he’s still in his post when 137 members of the House of Representatives voted to impeach him.

“Sa records ng House, sa records ng kasaysayan ng ating bansa, Andy Bautista will go down as the first Comelec chair who was impeached,” he said in a press conference.

Earlier in the day, Bautista announced he will resign by the end of the year to focus on his children amid his ongoing marital dispute.

Deputy Speaker Gwen Garcia and Roque paved the way for Bautista’s impeachment by moving during the plenary session for a voting on the motion of Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas to adopt the Committee on Justice’s dismissing the complaint against the Comelec chief.

Only 75 lawmakers voted to adopt the committee report while two abstained. A vote of at least one-third, or 98 of the 293 members of the House, is required to override the dismissal.

The justice committee is expected to prepare the articles of impeachment against Bautista so it could be submitted to the Senate for trial.
