You’re fired: Duterte boots out Mike Sueno at end of Cabinet meeting after grilling him in front of other Secretaries
President Rodrigo Duterte channeled his inner Donald Trump in axing one of the few people who convinced him to run in the 2016 elections.
Duterte announced the firing of Interior and Local Government Secretary Mike Sueno at the end of a tense Cabinet meeting where the former governor of
South Cotabato was asked grilled in front of his peers not unlike Trump’s popular show, “The Apprentice.”
In a statement, Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella confirmed that the President has removed Sueno from the Cabinet citing loss of trust and confidence.
” The announcement was made at the end of the 14th Cabinet Meeting. The President had earlier asked a few questions of Mr. Sueno but the summary dismissal served as a warning that Mr. Duterte would not countenance any questionable or legally untenable decisions by any member of the Cabinet,” said Abella.
“The Secretary had, in fact, been instrumental in convincing the President to run for election, but this did not deter the President from pursuing his drive for a trustworthy government by addressing issues like corruption,” Abella added.
Sueno’s own friends and undersecretaries at the Department of Interior and Local Government had accused Sueno of abusing his power, buying a new hotel in his province in just a few months in office, involvement in illegal gambling, and a shady fire truck deal with the Austrian government.
Sueno was a former chair of Duterte’s political party Partido Demokratikong Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan. He was the running mate of former Cebu Governor Lito Osmeña when he ran and lost in the 1998 presidential elections.
