A Liberal Party (LP) stalwart has cautioned the Duterte government over its plan to appeal before the Supreme Court (SC) the decision of the Makati City Regional Trial Court (RTC) not to issue an arrest warrant against opposition Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV.

Caloocan City Rep. Edgar Erice said briging up the matter of the non-issuance warrant versus Trillanes before SC would only create another form of divisiveness among branches of government.

“Bringing this issue of Sen. Trillanes to SC will burden the high court to another polarizing political issue,” said Erice.

Erice explained that with the midterm election fast approaching, government leaders should just respect the decision of Judge Andres Bartolome Soriano to withhold the issuance of an arrest warrant against Trillanes following President Rodrigo Duterte’s revocation of his amnesty grant last August.

“What our government leaders should do is to swallow their pride and bring closure to a useless exercise,” said Erice.

On Monday, Makati City RTC Branch 148 under Soriano denied the motion of the Department of Justice to issue an arrest order against Trillanes over his participation in the two failed coup attempts during the Arroyo Administration, but at the same time upheld the Presidential Proclamation 572 which voided the amnesty grant given to thr former rebel soldier.
