Two female inmates of the Correctional Institute for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City have died after succumbing to the deadly 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19), the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said.

The BuCor said one of the dead person deprived of liberty (PDL) is a 72-year-old woman who died last April 27 after being confined at the Sta. Ana Hospital since April 13.

“The CIW administration had reached out to her next of kin and had coordinated with the hospital for the proper disposition of the patient’s remains,” said BuCor which reported that she was the first confirmed COVID-19 case at CIW last April 18.

Aside from her, the BuCor said the other female PDL died last April 21 at the East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC) where she has been confined since April 13 also.

The BuCor noted that the PDL who died at the EAMC underwent testing on April 14 but the results was only released on April 27.

Aside from the two, 47 other CIW PDLs have been tested positive for COVID-19 and have been transferred to the quarantine facility of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.
