It might take a while before incoming President Rodrigo Duterte patches things up with the Philippine media industry as he continues to take umbrage at the journalists’ penchant for slanting news reports.
In a speaking engagement held Wednesday (June 22), Duterte criticized anew the state of journalism in the country, implying how it can be used some news executives to influence public opinions at the expense of real truths behind the stories they tell.
Duterte’s fresh brickbats against the media came about when he was discussing human rights issues that continue to hound his incoming administration. He lamented that reporters twisted his controversial statement on media killings to make it appear like he’s endorsing it.
“Wala naman akong sinabing patayin ang journalists. Ang sinabi ko na medyo nalito sila, there are three kinds [of journalists and there are reasons bakit pinapatay ang mga taga-media,” Duterte said, narrating the underlying circumstances behind the issue.
“The danger kasi ng media dito kaya ayaw ko na sila [is] the penchant to slant the story or to angling.
Sabi ko itong pangatlong grupo ito ‘yung pinapatay—[‘yung] tanggap dito, tanggap doon; atakihin ‘yung may mga illegal diyan tapos magbigay; ‘pag gusto ng dagdag, atakihin pa [ulit.]
Ito talaga ‘yung namamatay, alam natin ‘yan. And yet, when the news came out of the [ABS-CBN] pati sa mga bunganga nitong mga [broadcaster], sabi ko ang dudumi talaga ng isip ng mga puta…” Duterte said.
He also turned the tables on United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon, whom he called “stupid” for relying too much on news reports, instead of reviewing the whole story in its totality before releasing a statement condemning his remarks.
Duterte also reiterated he never catcalled GMA News reporter Mariz Umali during that fateful May 31 press conference.
He said he always whistles at people he doesn’t know by name to call their attention.
“Nagsasalita ako, I was meeting the Cabinet members, maingay kasi sila… Hindi naman ako nagsabing *whistles* ‘yon ang catcall ng babae. Ako magtawag sa mga sekyu rito ganoon because I do not know their names… ‘Yan, maglapit ‘yan… You know, ‘yung ganoon… Sabi ko nagpapapansin kayo? Tapos ginawa nilang parang bastos na… Kita mo kung maglaro ng… Kaya pabor talaga kung mayaman ka, may pera ka,” he said.
