Former Interior and Local Government Secretary Rafael Alunan III has called for the arrest of the lawmakers belonging to the Makabayan bloc following their suspected links to the armed communist rebel group.
Alunan, in a Facebook post, said the government should stop falling for the charade of Makabayan bloc and simply arrest them over alleged sedition.
“FOR THE LONGEST TIME GINAGAGO TAYO. NAGPAPAGAGO NAMAN TAYO. TAMA NA!” he said.
“Shut down the Makabayan bloc and have them arrested for seditious and rebellious acts inimical to our national interest, including those who aid and abet them,” he added.
Alunan made the comment after DILG Secretary Eduardo Añosaid Makabayan lawmakers are constitutionally required to condemn the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army. Refusing to denounce the rebel group showed the truth of the organization, Año said.
“As we continue to innovate democracy to seek peace at home, we’ve taken risky choices, such as this. A lot of time has passed for sincerity to set in, but hasn’t, detrimental to the state of the nation. It’s time to hard ball to end the charade,” Alunan said.
The Makabayan lawmakers earlier denied allegations they serve as communist terrorist front organizations of CPP-NPA and recruit people to join the ranks.
