It would have been Bongbong Marcos-Rody Duterte tandem in the 2022 elections if the President hadn’t dropped out of the vice presidential race.
Marcos bared that Duterte was actually his first pick as running mate when he considered running for president in the upcoming elections.
The plan however came to naught after Duterte pulled out of the VP contest and announced plans to retire from politics. Duterte was instead replaced by his aide Senator Bong Go.
The former senator issued the statement after filing his certificate of candidacy for president under the Partido ng Federal ng Pilipinas at the Commission on Elections on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021.
“I’d be very candid with you. The reason why (no one filed for vice president under PFP) is this – the original plan was for us to adopt PRRD for our vice presidential candidate, pero sa mga nangyari noong nakaraang Sabado eh nagbago lahat ng plano,” Marcos said during a press briefing.
“Kaya’t ngayon eh nag-consulta kami, ‘yung partido at syempre lahat nung mga ating ibang kasamahan na kung anong dapat gawin, and what do we do now and so that is where it is,” he said.
When asked if he was open to having the President’s former aide to be his veep, Marcos appeared open to such possibility.
“Paano ‘yon? Bongbong-Bong? Bong to the third power?” Bongbong asked.
“Baka puwede rin. We’ll see,” he said.
Marcos, son and namesake of the late President Ferdinand Marcos, has formally applied to become the country’s next president during the COC filing. He has promised to bring “unifying leadership” in a pandemic-hit country. He has asked the public to rally behind his “noblest of causes.”
“We will succeed,” he said.
“If we have learned anything in this time of Covid pandemic, it is that each of us, no matter our station, is in need of the help of our fellow Filipinos,” he said.
