UP School of Statistics warns vs ‘kalye surveys’: Biased methodologies will give biased results

February 21, 2022

Not all surveys about the upcoming elections are created equal.

The University of the Philippines School of Statistics (UPSS) has cautioned the public about believing “kalye surveys” or polls conducted with unclear methodologies, saying their results are skewed to serve a particular purpose.

In a statement, the faculty members of UPSS said certain surveys may be biased depending on pollsters’ sample selection strategies and data collection processes.

“Biased methodologies will only give biased results. Thus, we call on the public to be critical of surveys in this respect. Do not immediately accept survey results as they are,” they said.

Without mentioning any pollsters, the UPSS faculty members expressed dismay for proponents of “kalye surveys” conducted by some vloggers, as well as polls posted on Facebook and social media sites.

“We are dismayed by their cavalier disregard for the principles of data gathering. We also witness PR companies, private individuals, and even some media organizations publishing results of surveys with unclear methodologies,” they said.

The UPSS faculty members said among the questions that should be asked by the public about the surveys are the basis of the sample size, the margin of error, the process of selecting respondents and the events surrounding the period of data gathering.
