Incoming Vice President Sara Duterte Carpio will be joining the Marcos Cabinet.
President-in-waiting Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced on Wednesday his decision to tap Davao City Mayor Sara as the next Secretary of the Department of Education.
Marcos, in a brief public address message aired on his Facebook page, said he asked Mayor Sara to serve as the Education Secretary and she has accepted the offer. Mayor Sara, a lawyer, will be the first government appointee to be made by Marcos.
“I am already authorized to announce the first nominee that we will be giving to the Commission on Appointments when the time comes, should I be proclaimed, and that is our incoming Vice President has agreed to take the brief of Department of Education,” Marcos said.
“Tinanong ko sa kanya kung kaya niya ‘yung trabaho, mahirap ang trabaho ng Secetary of Education so pero nag-agree naman siya,” he added.
Marcos and his running mate Duterte are bound to take the reins of power following their commanding lead in the presidential and VP elections, respectively, based on partial and unofficial vote tally. The official transfer of power is scheduled on June 30.
Marcos believes that Mayor Sara agreed to take the education portfolio since she is a mother looking after the interest of her children. “Palagay ko kasama na diyan dahil she is a mother, and she wants to make sure her children are well trained, well educated, that’s the best motivation we can hope for,” he said.
As to other prospective appointees, Marcos said an executive committee will hold consultations with various sectors on their possible recommendation for Cabinet Secretaries and other officials.
