Re-elected Senator Sherwin Gatchalian is aspiring to become the next Senate President.
Gatchalian, in an interview over One News’ “The Chiefs” on Thursday, confirmed his intention to seek the top Senate post and already mentioned the matter to his colleagues.
Backed by the presidential tandem of Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Sara Duterte Carpio, the lawmaker from Valenzuela ranked fourth in the recent senatorial elections, securing his second term in the Senate. Gatchalian, a member of the Nationalist People’s Coalition, obtained more than 20.3 million based on partial and unofficial vote tally.
“Yes, I’m vying for the Senate presidency and I’ve talked to some of our colleagues about that,” the Boston-educated senator said.
“Of course since re-electionist naman ako and I’ve been in the Senate for the last six years, I have also good plans for the institution,” he added.
According to Gatchalian, the most important factor is getting the vote and support of fellow senators.
“You’re now campaigning for 24 senators. They have different ideas and thoughts about how the Senate should be as an institution,” he said.
Apart from Gatchalian, other potential contenders for the Senate presidency are reportedly Senators Cynthia Villar, Juan Miguel Zubiri, and Francis Escudero.
