A highly esteemed academic/economist who served three administrations is likely to join the economic team of the incoming Marcos government.
President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is inclined to appoint Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Benjamin Diokno to become the next Secretary of the Department of Finance.
The looming appointment of Diokno has been first reported by Politiko’s sister site Bilyonaryo.
Diokno, a former budget secretary, is set to wrap up his term as BSP Governor in June 2023.
If he accepts Marcos’ offer, this will be the fourth administration Diokno would work with.
Diokno, an economics graduate from the University of the Philippines, first worked as budget undersecretary for former President Corazon Aquino, and later promoted as Budget Secretary under President Joseph Estrada and again for President Rodrigo Duterte in 2016. He was appointed BSP governor in 2019.
Diokno, a UP professor emeritus, also earned a Master of Arts in Political Economy from the Johns Hopkins University in the United States and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Economics from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University.
