All lips are sealed: Probe on shooting of 3 Muslim students at dead end

The National Bureau of Investigation’s (NBI) probe on the death of three Muslim students in an alleged police shootout in Sultan Kudarat has been at a standstill due to lack of witnesses, Politiko learned.

An Iskooper said investigators are having a hard time piecing together details of the alleged shootout last December since no one was willing to give their testimony to authorities.

Samanoden Ali, Horton Ansa Jr. and Arshad Ansa, all 19 years old, were shot dead while they were riding a motorcycle on December 1. Policemen allegedly fired at them at a checkpoint in Barangay Didratas.

So far, the Iskooper said only the forensic and ballistic examinations have been completed.

“Local investigators are having a hard time getting witnesses to go on record to testify against the policemen,” the Iskooper said.

Senator Robin Padilla, a Muslim, personally visited the students’ relatives last December. He also asked the NBI to conduct a probe on the incident.

In a privilege speech, Padilla said one of the students had bullet wounds on both palms, while one was allegedly choked using a shirt.

The victims’ relatives claim the students were unarmed when police shot at them. The Philippine National Police, however, maintained that a shootout happened.

Lambayong police chief Major Jenahmeel Toñacao claimed the students fired at policemen who tried to stop them at the checkpoint. He has since been relieved from his post.
