Seasoned GMA-7 journalist Susan Enriquez recently stressed that accountability remains a must in journalists even amid the waning public trust in news media.
Enriquez shared her insights on the changing landscape of journalism in a recent interview on the online show “PolitiSkoop” hosted by Michael Fajatin and Ina Andolong.
In the interview, the Kapuso broadcaster admitted missing the high level of trust that people had for journalists during her time.
“Ang namimiss ko is yung mataas ang pagtingin ng mga tao sa mga journalist like us. May nire-represent ka na company and ma naniniwala sila sa ‘yo na lahat ng binabalita mo ‘yun ang totoo,” she said.
“Unlike today, ang nangyayari naikukumpara ka nila sa influencers, sa bloggers,” she said.
But she emphasized that journalists have a sense of accountability in performing their job.
“Syempre sa atin hindi nawawala sa atin ang accountability dahil may nirerepresent kang company,” she said.
Enriquez also highlighted the challenges of being a journalist in the past, where technology was not as advanced as it is today.
“Parang ‘yung dati, parang kailangan noon equipped dedication, dapat aggressive ka talaga kasi nga kulang pa tayo noon sa mga technology para mas mabilis mo maparating ang mga balita,” she said.
She also wished that modern gadgets were already available during her time as a journalist in Mindanao. Many news stories could have been dispatched and relayed to the public if digital tools were present then, she said.
“Kasi parang feeling ko, ang dami pang mga balita nuon na dapat naipapadala mo agad, naipapahayag mo agad sa mga manunuod hindi mo na nagagawa kasi kailangan mo talaga mag-extra effort para mapadala ang mga balita dito sa Manila na kinover mo from other provinces specially ang mga remote areas diyan sa Mindanao pero how I wish,” she said.
